first aid for soldiers
This series includes prints, drawings, paintings, and mixed media pieces that revolve around a 1953 military manual called "First Aid for Soldiers" that I found in a local Army/Navy surplus store run by a family of interestingly enigmatic Southern politicos. I focused on the sterile yet frightening content of this manual for quite some time. As I scratched a drypoint illustration into a metal plate, one of the other students recognized the image. She said that the manual was still in use when she was in the Reserves during the 1990's, and it was unchanged enough that she recognized my interpretation of one of the dated illustrations carved in zinc.
